Pub weddings are by far my favourite! So when Jade and Nick asked me to shoot their Gypsy Queen North London Pub wedding in Kentish Town I was GAME ON. There day was all kinds of sweet, elegant, thoughtful, relaxed and just generally really fucking nice! Like many of the weddings I’ve photographed this summer it was absolutely sweltering, scroll down to check out their hot photos!
What’s your love story?
We met working at a call centre at Reading University – a less romantic setting you would struggle to find!
What was the proposal like?
We got engaged on the morning of Christmas day after biking in the rain down to a deserted beach in Tulum, Mexico.
Where was your ceremony and reception held?
Burgh House – beautiful venue close to home and the Heath / Gipsy Queen – our local pub with a beautiful outdoor space and they were very helpful when we were thinking about picking them unlike other pubs who didn’t really seem to want the hassle of a wedding!
What about your outfits?
Nick wore a petrol blue paul smith suit with matching paul smith ties for the ushers and best man (Paul Smith is a Nottingham man!)
I wore a bridal dress by designer Maggie Sottero and Midgley. A surprise to chose an actual wedding dress, but tried it on and loved it. Didn’t want to take it off in the shop!
Tell us about what your squad wore:
Our groomsmen – blue suits (non-matching), white shirt and a paul smith floral tie (matching) and our bridesmaids wore Light Grey Multi Way Maxi Dress from Marks & Spencer.
Talk us through your wedding decor:
Wedding theme was really keeping it simple and picking what matters to us. With Burgh House and Gipsy Queen both venues had the style we really liked and both within walking distance from where we live! Convenient! We wanted to keep it local to the area.
Flowers: Short brief but to include wildflowers, grasses and fresh herbs. Also love Daisy’s and Sweet Peas so to in clude those. After seeing King-Weys work we also wanted a flower hedgerow for the windows. It exceeded our expectations!
Table Names: We picked parks in London, since adopting a rescue dog we have spent most weekends/evenings trying to find green spaces in London to exercise him! So we picked parks we have taken the dog for walks!
Table Plans: Jade’s mum Sarah and husband Daren made all the gin favours (months in advance) from sloe berries in the Garden. Really wanted those to take centre stage on the tables alongside the wildflowers.
Cake: Victoria Sponge lovingly made by Kerrie (Jade’s sister) and Shelly. There was lots of debate about if it should be semi naked or a naked cake. In the end naked won!
Tell us about the ceremony?
We were hot in that small room but a nice and simple registry service from a Camden registrar with Jade’s sister Kerrie reading out a poem she had written.
Nick:Favourite bit was the struggle with the ring as the heat had expanded the size of our fingers but also in contrast the claminess meant they were eventually able to slip on!
Jade: Favourite bit was hearing Cinematic Orchestra to build a home played on the piano just before I was about to walk in!
What was your plan for the reception?
After going round the houses and looking at so many different wedding options – we finally decided the best thing for us was to try and keep it as simple and stress-free as possible; hence the venue being at our local. With the weather being nice we wanted to utilise the garden space and have the pub kitted out so you could tell it was a wedding but in a kind of rustic-London-pub kind of way!
Personally my favorite bits were arriving with the confetti and being handed an ice cold Beavertown neckoil beer (my favorite beer) and then in the evening getting all our friends and fam on the dancefloor for a boogie.
How did you find working with me?
AMAZING. You are very relaxing and calming but with a crazy party vibe as well! And we’ve got a bond through our rescue dogs!
What entertainment did you have?
Our friend from uni Marshal was the DJ and absolutely nailed it (especially considering he is not your ‘traditional’ wedding DJ)
What’s your planning advice for other couples getting married?
Nick: Try to keep the planning as stress free as possible and have it at a pub; this means when you go for planning meetings you get served free drinks!
Jade: Keep it simple and don’t get stressed if plans change last minute. We had a wet weather plan all year only for the sun to beam down so you just need to go with the flow!
Only thing I think we would do differently is go with our gut in the first place, we planned a Wedding in North London then other variations of weddings only to come back to the original plan!
